Art in Austin:  Landmarks

Interested in learning about some of the awesome art here in Austin?  Landmarks is an organization that offers free tours to the public which showcases art on the UT campus.

According to the brochure, "Landmarks is the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin.  Its projects beautify the main campus and engage visitors and the university community with great works of art".

I've had the pleasure of taking two walking tours with Landmarks in the last year or so.  One was a daytime tour of some of the sculptures on campus.  The second was a night tour that offered the opportunity to see some artworks against the night sky.

I was able to snag a few photos during the night tour, but would recommend checking them out in person if you have the chance!

This piece is made of old canoes.  How cool is that?!  It extends over the street and mimics the canopy of trees that can be seen down the road.  Someone on the tour had asked how it stays secure when so many canoes are suspended over the street.  I forget the exact figure, but the piece is anchored into the ground by quite a bit.  I want to say 50 feet, but don't quote me on that!  I will post the correct number if I'm able to locate the information.

Projections

This was the final stop of the night tour.  The projected is text is sourced from the closed caption transcripts of five live network news streams as well as archived transcripts.  It was mesmerizing to watch the scrolling text and really interesting to read the text from various sources.  I also loved seeing the reflection of the UT Tower!

The newest artwork is an installation of photographs at the UT Dell Medical School by Ann Hamilton.  The artist photographed more than 500 volunteers at various sites around the community.  The photos were taken through a semi-transparent film.  The areas where the individual made contact with the film are the highlights of the photographs.  I have not been by to check out this installation yet, but it is on my to-visit list!  I did have the chance to obtain a copy of the book of photographs that Landmarks was handing out on Texas Independence Day at the Capital.  They let me know the photographs are in the lobby of the UT Dell Medical School and that anyone can go in to view them.  Visitors might need to sign in upon arrival, but there should be no issue if you want to take a look at the artwork.
